By the time you have a couple of quotes on the table, it is easy to fixate on the totals and forget the detail that decides whether you are actually getting a good deal. A quick, consistent window quote checklist fixes that. Go through the same points on every quote, tick off what is covered, and flag what is missing. Do it before you commit and you will never sign up to a nasty surprise.

Work through the same points on every quote so nothing slips through.

The product

  • Frame material, system and colour are named — not just “uPVC windows”.
  • Glazing is specified: double or triple, the energy rating and the U-value.
  • Any special glass — acoustic, toughened, obscured or solar-control — is listed where you need it.
  • Hardware (handles, hinges, locks) and the security standard are stated.

If any of these terms are unfamiliar, keep our jargon explained guide open alongside the quote, and read up on energy ratings explained so you can tell a genuine A-rated upgrade from a label.

The fitting and making good

  • Removal and disposal of the old windows is included.
  • “Making good” — plastering, sealing and finishing — is covered inside and out.
  • Scaffolding or access equipment, if needed, is priced in.
  • The fitters are named as employed or vetted, not an unknown subcontractor.

The guarantee and certification

  • The installer is FENSA or Certass registered and will issue the certificate.
  • The guarantee length is stated and it is insurance-backed.
  • You know exactly what the guarantee covers — frames, glass, hardware and fitting.

The price and timing

  • The total is clear and includes VAT.
  • The deposit is modest and the payment stages are set out.
  • The lead time and how long the job takes are in writing.
  • Any funding or contribution options are noted as subject to eligibility and a home survey.

If spreading the cost matters, you can compare funded glazing quotes as one more line on the checklist rather than a headline saving, and knowing what windows actually cost helps you judge whether the total is fair.

One box you should never skip: is it in writing? A promise made at the kitchen table but missing from the quote is not part of your contract. If it matters, it goes on the paper.

Putting the checklist to work

Score each quote against the list and the strongest one usually stands out — often not the cheapest, but the one with the fewest blanks. Take your completed checklists back to the hub on how to compare window quotes, and if a quote leaves too many boxes empty, check it against our quote red flags before you decide.
